Holy Week and Easter at St Mary’s

As we enter the most important period in the church year, do join us for as many of these services as you can, as we enter deeply in the mystery of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection together

The services will be in church, unless stated.

Saturday 27th March

  • 5.00 pm Holy Eucharist

Palm Sunday: Sunday 28th March

On Palm Sunday we remember Jesus entering Jerusalem to be greeted by the crowds. We join together in church or in our homes for our 9.30am services including a dramatic reading of the Passion story.

  • 8.00 am Holy Communion
  • 9.30 am Holy Eucharist
  • 9.30 am Morning Service – online

Monday of Holy Week: Monday 29th March

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week, we gather at 8.00 pm for a devotional address to help us enter more deeply into the meaning and events of the last days of Jesus’ life, with Holy Eucharist.

Tuesday of Holy Week: Tuesday 30th March

  • 8.00 pm Holy Eucharist with Address

Wednesday of Holy Week: Wednesday 31st March

  • 8.00 pm Holy Eucharist with Address

Maundy Thursday: Thursday 1st April

Our evening services in church and online at 8.00 pm recall the events of the Last Supper, the washing of feet and Jesus’ gift to us of the Eucharist.

It ends with a vigil, reminding us of the Garden of Gethsemane where Christ in his Sacrament waits; and we watch and pray with him.

Good Friday: Friday 2nd April

Our All Age Service is suitable for everyone. We gather online to offer our songs, prayers and readings as we remember the events of the first Good Friday and Jesus going to the Cross to die for us.

  • 11.30 am Walk of Witness, starting at the Church of St John Fisher
  • 1.30 pm Good Friday Liturgy with Communion

A stark and solemn service offered online at the very time when we recall Jesus hanging on the Cross.

Easter Day: Sunday 4th April

We join in our together in the churchyard and online in our homes to celebrate the risen Christ.

  • 8.00 am Holy Communion
  • 10.00 am All Age Easter Service – in the churchyard
  • 10.00 am Easter Morning Service – online

What you will need for the All-Age Worship on Good Friday

For those planning to tune in to our All-Age Worship on Good Friday at 10.00am, we would like people to prepare, if at all possible, a few resources to use in the service:

Prepare an Easter tree by either:

  • Cutting some branches from a bush in your garden and put in a large vase
  • Collecting some twigs from your daily walk and arranging in a vase
  • Using a house plant

We will decorate the tree during the service

Holy Week 2020 at St Mary’s

We’re very keen that, as best we can in these difficult times, we enter fully into the services of Holy Week and Easter, the most important week in the church year.

There will be Stations of the Cross and Easter Garden in the churchyard to engage with and we offer the following services online:


PALM SUNDAY – 5th April

MONDAY, TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY OF HOLY WEEK – 6th, 7th & 8th April, 8.00pm

Each night, we gather online at 8.00 pm for a devotional address from Bishop Robin to help us enter more deeply into the meaning and events of the last days of Jesus’ life, followed by the peaceful service of Compline to end the day.


MAUNDY THURSDAY – 9th April

8.00 pm           EVENING SERVICE with VIGIL

Our Easter celebrations start at dawn with the Vigil of Readings, as we hear again the story of our salvation, filling our homes with the new light of Easter.

10.00 am         EASTER DAY SERVICE

A broadcast service at 10.00 am as we join in our together online in our homes to celebrate the risen Christ.
